Sworn Attorney
Sworn Attorney at Law Martins Birks began his law career in 2002 at the law office of “U.Grube and A.Strautins.” In addition to working at the aforementioned legal practice, he has also worked as legal counsel at various companies and has taken part in the drafting and development of several national laws and regulations. From 2006 to 2009, he was the assistant to the Sworn Attorney at Law Ugis Grube, afterwards becoming a Sworn Attorney at Law himself, thus, gaining extensive experience in a wide variety of legal matters.
In 2006 Martins Birks graduated from the Faculty of Law at the University of Latvia with a Bachelor’s degree in Law, and in 2008 he completed his Master’s degree in Law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia.
After the completion of his Master’s degree and becoming a Sworn Attorney at Law, Martins Birks continued to supplement his legal knowledge by graduating, with honors, from the post-graduate studies programme “Information Communication Technologies & Media Law” at one of the consistently highly rated world universities – Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KU Leuven) in Belgium. The ICT & Media Law course is a postgraduate program aimed at providing a complete overview of the European ICT and Media Law sector, while also exploring the important interdisciplinary perspectives of technology, economy, socio-political, cultural and media studies for career professionals. Given that Martins Birks was one of the first Sworn Attorneys at Law with this kind of specialized education not only in Latvia, but also throughout Europe, he was called upon as a legal expert in Latvia’s first major data leakage case, the “Neo Case”. In relation to this case, Martins Birks has produced a number of legal opinions, summarizing the European case law and analyzing similar instances.
In continuing to develop his specialization, Martins Birks has completed the study courses “Law, Technology and Culture” and “Intellectual Property in the Digital Age” at one of the world’s best universities – Yale University.
In addition to practicing law since 2006, Martins Birks serves as a Council and Board member in a number of health service and biomedical product affiliated enterprises. In order to strengthen his knowledge of business management in the health sector, Martins Birks completed the course “Health Care Strategy” at the Yale University School of Management.
